                                  “Live in the Now”

Gadgets: Maybe you got some new ones for Christmas.  They sell
themselves by advertising they will make our lives easier, give us more
time…Hmmm.  As the year comes to a close it seems the natural course to
examine where all our time has gone.  During this time of the year some
live in the past, while others are so focused on the New Year they can’t see
today.  As I was pushing buttons on my truck radio the other day I heard
the words “Live in the now.”  The preacher I was listening to went on to
accentuate the incessant cell phone calls and text messaging that occurs
when we are in a conversation with someone.  He encouraged his listeners
to, “Be where you are, when you’re there.”  It really is a problem in our
world isn’t it?  It seems when we are speaking with one person we are still
linked to an invisible community of hundreds of others, any one of whom
can interrupt without notice.  Perhaps there is a lesson in this for all of us.
Living in the past will not prove profitable…and while making better
decisions in the upcoming year is wise, we’re not there just yet.   Lot’s wife
in the Bible is a good example of “not looking back” while James cautions
us about making plans that are not subject to God’s will (James 4:13-16).
So where are you?  Is this the end of a year or the beginning of one…or is
it… now?

Why Not Now?

.                                            How Long Has the Sky Been Falling?

was eating lunch and had an acorn fall on her head?  Some believe the fable or
a version of it at least, dates all the way back to 600 BC.  The phrase “the sky
is falling” has become a common term used to describe a mistaken belief that a
disaster is imminent. The movie “2012”, currently in the box office at the
theatre is a good example that the 2600 year old fable lives!  It would be easy
for some to say the tragedy in Haiti this past week is proof of the world coming
to an end.  The earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and has slain
tens of thousands remains a horrific event indeed, and should be met with
actions that show the love of Christ.  However, it is not a sign that the world is
about to end.  Much of this modern cry of the “sky is falling” is due to recent
interpretations of the ancient Mayan civilization’s calendar which predicts a
season of disasters somewhere near the end of the year 2012.  The Mayans
worshipped the sun, rain and corn and were known for sacrificing humans.
They were not a people that should be looked to as a credible source on the end
of the world.  The Bible on the other hand is a reliable source.  The Apostle
Peter commented on the earth’s end in 2 Peter 3:7
“But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept
in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of
ungodly men.”
“Reserved” the Bible said… but for how long?  Well lets do the math.
Following the rapture, there will be 7 years of tribulation on the earth, which is
followed by a 1000 year reign of Jesus from the throne of David in Jerusalem.
That means that the renovations planned for this old planet will not come due
until 1007 years after the rapture.

Keeping an eye on the Son,
Bro David
